HubSpot CRM
CRMThe best free CRM for small businesses that want to scale without switching platforms.
We built and launched a real course on 4 major platforms to find the best online course platform in 2026. Pricing, features, and honest verdict included.
The online education market crossed $400 billion in 2025, and individual creators are claiming a growing share of it. Whether you are a coach selling a signature program, a freelancer packaging expertise into a digital product, or a side-hustler looking for passive income, an online course platform is the engine that turns knowledge into revenue.
But picking the wrong platform can cost you hundreds per month before a single student enrolls. We built the same 6-module video course on Teachable, Thinkific, Kajabi, and Systeme.io to compare them side by side. Here is what we found.
Every platform was evaluated on five criteria that matter most to course creators:
Here is a snapshot before we dive into the details:
Systeme.io is the only platform on this list that gives you a genuinely usable free plan with courses, sales funnels, email marketing, and automation included at zero cost. No credit card required, no 14-day trial clock ticking down.
We had our test course live in under two hours, including the sales page and email confirmation sequence. The course builder is straightforward: create modules, add lessons (video, text, PDF), set drip schedules, and publish. No coding, no design skills needed.
The integrated approach is where Systeme.io separates itself. Your course, sales funnel, email list, and payment processing all live in one dashboard. When a student purchases, they are automatically enrolled, tagged in your email system, and entered into a post-purchase automation sequence. On other platforms, wiring up that workflow requires Zapier or manual configuration across multiple tools.
Video hosting is included. Upload directly to the platform without needing Vimeo or Wistia. Completion certificates are built in. Drip content scheduling works reliably.
The course player is functional but not as polished as Teachable or Kajabi. There are no community features, no discussion boards, and no mobile app for students. Video quality is compressed compared to dedicated hosts. Branding options for the course player are limited on the free plan.
For most creators selling a course under $500, these limitations are irrelevant. The student cares about the content, not whether the video player has a custom color scheme. But if you are selling a premium $2,000 program, the less polished interface may undermine the perceived value.
Free plan: $0. Startup plan ($27/mo) if you need more than 1 course: $324/year. Compare this to the $1,788 you would spend on Kajabi.

Teachable has been a course-creator favorite since 2014, and for good reason. The course player is clean, professional, and distraction-free. Students can track progress, access lectures across devices, and the overall experience feels like a premium product.
Teachable looks affordable at $39/month, but add in the tools you will need: an email platform ($29/mo for ConvertKit), a landing page builder ($37/mo for Leadpages), and a payment tool for upsells. Suddenly you are at $105/month before your first student enrolls. Systeme.io gives you all of those features for free.
Basic plan: $468/year + 5% transaction fees + third-party email and landing page tools. Realistic total: $1,200-1,500/year.
Thinkific offers a strong free plan that lets you create one course with unlimited students and no transaction fees. If your only goal is to host a single course and you do not need funnels or email marketing built in, Thinkific is a solid choice.
Thinkific is a better pure course platform. The course builder is more feature-rich, the student experience is slightly better, and community features exist (on paid plans). But Systeme.io is a better business platform. You get courses plus funnels plus email plus automation, which means you can actually market and sell your course without additional subscriptions.
Free plan: $0 for one course. Basic plan ($36/mo): $432/year. Plus email and funnel tools: $800-1,200/year total.
Kajabi is the premium option. It includes courses, coaching, community, email marketing, funnels, a website builder, and analytics in one platform. The product is polished, the templates are gorgeous, and the marketing tools are genuinely powerful.
Kajabi is a better product in almost every individual feature. But it costs $149/month compared to $0/month for Systeme.io's free plan. The question is whether you need that level of polish on day one. For most people launching their first course, the answer is no. Start free, validate the idea, then upgrade if revenue justifies the cost. We wrote a full Systeme.io vs Kajabi comparison if you want a deeper breakdown.
Basic plan: $1,788/year (monthly billing) or $1,428/year (annual billing).
For most people reading this article — especially first-time course creators, coaches, and solopreneurs — Systeme.io is the best place to start. The free plan gives you everything you need to build, market, and sell your first course without paying a single dollar in monthly fees. No other platform matches this value proposition.
If your course business is already generating $5,000 or more per month and you want a more premium student experience, upgrade to Kajabi. If you specifically need the best-looking course player and you are comfortable paying for separate email and funnel tools, choose Teachable. If you want a pure course platform with community features, Thinkific is worth considering.
But start free. Validate your idea. Get your first students. Then decide if you need to upgrade. The platform matters far less than the quality of your course content and your ability to reach the right audience.
